Dave Burlew, Naturally Grown Gardens organic CSA Farm
Dave Burlew has run
the Community Shares Agriculture project on the Goldstein farm in the borough
of Roosevelt for the last five years and this year is relocating to a new
location -- Hopewell Valley Vineyards in Pennington, New Jersey. Dave
is currently accepting new members for this location. CSA shareholders pay a
share and receive fresh organic vegetables every week for approximately 26
weeks beginning in May and ending around Thanksgiving. This includes produce
such as leeks, onions, collard greens, chard, peppers, heirloom tomatoes and
melons, kale, lettuce, cabbage, cucumbers, scallions, cauliflower, green and
dragon tongue beans, and Black Beauty, Clara and Orient charm eggplants.
The CSA offers a more diverse range of the vegetables that can be found in
local produce stores, as well as some vegetables that cannot be found in local
stores. Burlew doesn't use sprays or treatments on its produce nor does it ship
its produce. Customers pick up shares in reusable containers. "The produce goes
from the field to the plate," he said. "It's a perfect example of having less
of an impact on the environment." A native of Asbury Park, Burlew has
had worked for several years as an apprentice with farmer Ed Libzbarski in
Jamesburg and was an organ ic farmer in Vermont previous to this. He also
worked at the Whole Earth Center on Nassau Street in Princeton. He attended
Long Island University's Southampton College in New York and the University of
Hawaii, and studied agriculture at Rutgers University in New Brunswick.
